Atlanta Chapter Spotlight: Anti-Ouch Pouch for Awareness
Atlanta Chapter Spotlight: Anti-Ouch Pouch for Awareness

We are so proud of our chapters! WCAA is made up of extraordinary members who continue to make it a priority to give back to their communities.
This month, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recognized our Atlanta Chapter for their efforts in raising awareness for breast cancer and giving back to local breast cancer patients and survivors. Since 2008, the WCAA’s Atlanta Chapter members get together annually to sew Anti-Ouch Pouches for cancer patients. These pouch-like-purses are donated directly to cancer centers in their area. Local companies helped them reach their goal by donating Velcro and batting to the worthy cause.
More specifically, up to 30 members drove up to 1.5 hours to meet at the workroom of Judy Jansen-Alcorn Gates in Lilburn to work on crafting the Anti-Ouch Pouches. According to WCAA Member Jan Britt, “The WCAA Atlanta Chapter decided to make this event a community project to help others. All we want to do is provide people with a little bit of comfort and to let them know that some stranger cares about them.”
Britt goes on to describe the bags as something resembling a purse; the strap hangs over the shoulder, is adjustable for one’s height, and includes batting inside to provide a cushion to sensitive areas. The bags feature a “convenience” pocket, perfect for maintaining easy access to things such as IDs, cell phones, and keys.
"We never know who gets them. It doesn’t matter,” Britt says. “We get together, have fun, and know that we’re doing something special for somebody else.”
The pouches are distributed in October to cancer institutes and/or infusion centers.
